Description

The former Tappan Zee Bridge first opened for traffic in 1955. Due to a significant increase in commuters in recent years, the iconic bridge called for a new design, leading to its transformation into the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. This project entailed the construction of a completely new, massive bridge spanning 3.1 miles. Additions included 419-foot towers with outwardly inclined and geometrically aligned cables, eight general traffic lanes, dedicated public transit lanes, four break-down emergency lanes, and a new bike lane and pedestrian path featuring state-of-the-art traffic monitoring systems. The project was awarded to Tappan Zee Constructors in 2013 and was completed in 2017.
