A specially shaped steel insert (typically a rod or disc) is embedded into fresh concrete. After the concrete hardens, a hollow hydraulic ram applies tension to pull the insert out, extracting a cone-shaped plug of concrete. The force required is recorded and correlated to compressive strength. This test can be used for both quality control and investigative purposes on new and existing structures.
